While training with our good friend Kevin Doughty of Highseas Gundog Training in Hintlesham, Harley had consistently shown his ability on the challenging terrain at the ground. Unbeknownst to me, Kevin being great friends with David Latham (England captain and selector) had put us forward for England selection. So, I was equally surprised and delighted to receive the invitation to go to selection from David in Cheshire in late April.
Not really knowing what to expect and travelling up the night before - I met up with fellow Suffolk selection invitee Brian Chesser for dinner and we discussed what might happen the following day.
The following morning we arrived alongside 20+ other hopefuls to try out for the team. The day was set out as a test of six retrieves - alongside a running partner - over some fantastically steep and challenging ground. Through and over deep gullies, jumps and pens, we were sent for long marks, distractions from static points and a small walk-up. Two A panel judges along with the team Captain assessed each dog and handler with some failing, struggling and some completing all the retrieves. I was delighted with Harley as we completed all the retrieves quite smartly - I must say it was very exciting - feeling the most pressure I can remember just taking part.
Relieved to have at least completed the test, we waited for the results to be announced. It was amazing that we were announced as being given a place on the England 2022 alongside five other handlers and dogs.
Harley and I were 4th pair (reserve)
for the Scottish Gamefair at Scone Palace and 3rd pair running at the GWCT Gamefair at Ragley Hall.
What an incredible experience - the drive home went by a lot quicker than the drive up there - with a big smile on my face all the way home. What an incredible dog Harley is.
